Homily for Wednesday January 6 2021
1 John 4:11-18
Psalm 72
Mark 6:45-52
We continue our reflection on the priceless virtue of love: “… if God so loved us, we also ought to love another… God is love and he who abides in love abides in God and God abides in him”. We go through much trouble looking for God. Yet God is very much within our reach. We simply have to love and we will see God present in our community. Here, we are talking about selfless sacrificial love of God which is exemplified in the death of Jesus to save us from our sins: “ Greater love than this no man has than that a man should lay down his for his friends”( John 15:13). We are not talking about selfish love which so much characterises our world. It is because selfish love reigns, that is why we have so many unchristian acts which have left us without the much-longed peace.
Our Gospel reading tells us about Jesus walking on the sea. When we love the way God expects of us, then we will be able to do the impossible. Our practise of sincere love will enable us to overcome obstacles which hitherto were considered insurmountable. The disciples cried out in fear, thinking Jesus was a ghost. Our first reading tells us that “perfect love casts out fear.” When we truly love, all the ‘ghosts’ that frighten us will vanish into the thin air.
Let us resolve as we start the new year, to truly love so that God can be present in our midst. With this, we will have a much better human community.
