Homily for Tuesday December 24 2019

* 2 Sam 7 : 1 – 16, Lk 1 : 67 – 79.

Salvation happens when a man’s search for God coincides with God’s search for man. That is exactly what happened in the case of David as we read in today’s 1st reading. David was trying to please God by building him a house but God ended up building him a dynasty for ever. He gave him the promise of divine security ( rest from his enemies ) and prosperity ( his throne shall be established for ever).

The song of Zechariah ( the Benedictus) contains the main ingredients of the fruits of salvation : BLESSED BE THE LORD GOD OF ISRAEL, FOR HE HAS VISITED HIS PEOPLE AND REDEEMED THEM AND HAS RAISED UP FOR US A HORN OF SALVATION IN THE HOUSE OF DAVID HIS SERVANT. They can now serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of their life. This promise of freedom for the children of God is found in Gal 4 : 1 – 7 and Mark 16 : 18.

All we need now is to be smart enough to acquire this knowledge of salvation given to his people for the forgiveness of their sins. During this Christmas season, we need to take up our position as children of God. This position is characterized by 3 major signs : PRAYER, FASTING AND OFFERING. Through prayer we fellowship with God’s grace. Through fasting we liberate ourselves from the power of sin. Through offering, we win God’s favour and blessings. Happy Christmas to you and may God bless you today!
