Homily for Tuesday of the 2nd Week of Advent

Theme: Seek the lost!

Homily for Tuesday December 7 2021

(St Ambrose, Bishop & Doctor).

Is.40:1-11; Matt.18:12-14

I think about Nigeria and all I see is recession, poverty, hardship, hunger… The reality around us is a sharp contrast to the joyful message of Isaiah in the first reading. But not to worry. Advent season is not just about waiting for Jesus’s birth; it is also about reaching out to those around us, and assisting them in whatever ways we can. The idea is to speak words of comfort, for the “the Lord GOD comes with might…He will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arms, he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young…”

Friends, St Ambrose became Bishop of Milan at a time when there was serious conflict between Catholics and Arians over the appointment of Bishops. He was a lay man at the time and not even baptised. Coerced by the people and the Emperor, he was baptised, ordained, and installed Bishop within a week, on December 7, 374. He immediately went about seeking the lost, and like a good Shepherd, he never grew weary of fighting the Arian heresy with learning, firmness and gentleness. His extraordinary life and teachings made it possible for him to convert St Augustine. Can we do the same?

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
