HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 20TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME CYCLE II
THEME: Get rid of the god-complex!
BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)
HOMILY FOR TUESDAY AUGUST 16 2022
Ezek.28:1-10; Matt.19:23-30
We have seen and known ruthless rulers, who usually become so swollen because of wealth. You see, wealth brings power, and power corrupts. When we have too much wealth, we develop the god-complex, forgetting that we shall die. Have you ever seen anyone so rich, that he/she raised a cheque to buy eternal life? God condemns the ruler of Tyre through the Prophet Ezekiel in the first reading of today. Why? The man had developed the god-complex. He felt invincible, indestructible. He was terribly mistaken.
Friends, what’s the value of all the wealth if it can’t be used for any good? Jesus says riches can in fact be obstacles to salvation. The rich man needs God’s special grace to be able to make heaven. Why is everyone crazy about money then? So that we can buy Bugattis and Lamborghinis? Are we driving them to heaven? Let’s try to remain humble. Heaven isn’t for the swollen. Hence, Jesus says to leave everything and follow him. In this decision lies a hundred fold reward and eternal life.
Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
