HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 13TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME CYCLE II
THEME: SAVE US
BY: Fr. GERALD M. MUSA
HOMILY FOR TUESDAY JUNE 28 2022
The Apostles were with Jesus in a boat which was tossed by the wind. They were overwhelmed with fear and cried out to Jesus: “Save us for we are perishing” (Matthew 8:25). Jesus rebuked them saying, “Why are you afraid, O men of little faith?” (Matthew 8:26). He calmed the storm immediately. Currently, Nigeria seems to be that boat that is swamped by the waves as Nigerian citizens, who are in the boat have never been so terrorized in the past ten years. Among those who have been terrorized are members of the Church (worshippers) and priests who have suffered grievously in the hands of terrorists, having been kidnapped, abducted, and killed. Despite the gloomy situation, an anonymous writer encourages all to respond to fear with faith. He wrote: “My God and I will walk the plank together; my God and I will jump into the sea; My God and I will meet all kinds of weather; my God and I will walk triumphantly. Furthermore, the prophet Isaiah assures all those who are discouraged, disappointed, and terrified: “See, the Lord’s hand is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear” (59:1). In the face of terrorism, let us turn to Jesus who saves. May the Lord deliver us from the storms of terrorism that make us live in perpetual fear. Do we always fix our gaze on Christ when we experience the tempest and storms of life?
