HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF 5TH WEEK OF EASTER.

THEME: JESUS GIVES PEACE.

BY: FR. GERALD M. MUSA.

An African proverb says, “You can’t stop troubles from coming but you can refuse to give it a chair to sit on.” We are surrounded by all kinds of troubles in Nigeria and the rest of the world. These include personal, interpersonal, economic, political, social, and moral troubles. Politically, we grapple with poor leadership, where those who control the levers of power amass wealth for themselves and leave the poor yawning with hunger; socially, we are dealing with insecurity and ethnoreligious conflicts; economically, we are challenged by inflation which rose to the highest in five months (15.92% in April 2022); aside from that is the high cost of food and energy; more stil, Nigeria is the second-highest on the global umemployment list with 33% unemployment rates (See Bloomberg, Africa Edition, 15th March 2022). How can we enjoy peace and maintain our sanity amid these troubles? Jesus assures his followers, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid (John 14:27).

According to Apostle Paul, peace lies in a life of prayer, and so he says: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything…His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7). How closely do we relate with Jesus, the giver ofpeace?
