My Morning Minute With Jesus
Have you really? Peter speaks for us again today, and like it happened at Caesarea Philippi, the Lord responds with a challenge for us all. The “everything” that is left behind in the process of discipleship means that material possessions, human relations, or even personal interests must not come between God and us, the difficulties and persecution notwithstanding. The rewards of an unhindered relationship with God are stated clearly: a full measure of what one has given up, and in addition, eternal life.

We began reading the letter of St. Peter yesterday, his first and one of the Catholic Epistles. He urges us to vigilance; to protect the faith and spiritual heritage that we have received, even as we watch out for the corrupting influence of wrong teachings, ideologies and detractors. The measure for such vigilance is lined up with God’s invitation for us to be holy because God is holy. That divine model prescribes the path of perfection for our daily endeavor as we strive to be godlike. In practical terms, we must imitate God in the various divine attributes that we already know of Him: love, compassion, forgiveness, understanding, justice, generosity, faithfulness, and integrity. It also involves abandoning our old ungodly ways and finding a way with likeminded people on the path of righteousness.
Lord, may your right hand, your holy arm, aid us in our struggles. Amen.
