Theme: The image of light

Homily for Thursday January 27 2022
The central message in today’s liturgy is on the image of “light”. Living in the light of God inspires and breeds enthusiasm. In God, we are filled with the Holy Spirit so as to shine brightly with the radiance of His truth, love, and goodness.
The first reading (2 Sam. 7: 18-19, 24-29) presents to us David’s response to God’s promise through the prophet, Nathan, of blessing David’s household forever. David appreciates God’s benevolence on him in spite of his “littleness”. In humility he asked: “Who am I, Lord, and what is my House, that you have led me as far as this? How often do I reflect on and appreciate God’s goodness in my life?
In the gospel (Mark 4: 21-25), Jesus reminds us that we are the light-bearers of God’s truth and love. Truth will always prevail even when we want to suppress or destroy it. So never you attempt to stand against truth. It is indestructible! You may live to regret.
Dear friends, there is great freedom and joy for those who live in God’s light and who seek God’s truth and goodness. When truth burns in our hearts, we are enthused (“en” – “in”, “theos” – “God”) to share it for the benefit of others. This is putting the lamp on the lamp-stand!
I pray as we journey in life today, we will be humble like David to appreciate God’s goodness in our lives and be courageous enough to share this goodness with enthusiasm bringing light, joy and love to those around us. May God’s Word be a lamp for our steps and a light for our path (Ps. 119: 105). Have a day full of God’s light and truth!
