HOMILY FOR THE VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

My Morning Minute With Jesus

“Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (Luke 1:42).

Today’s feast celebrates that revelatory encounter between Mary, bearing Jesus in her womb, and Elizabeth, her cousin, bearing John the Baptist in her womb. Both women experienced significant divine interventions in their lives that changed their stories forever. They both bore the products of such divine interventions in their wombs. The meeting had the Holy Spirit in active attendance. So, Elizabeth was moved by the Spirit to proclaim Mary blessed and as Mother of the Lord.

The joy of John the Baptist in the womb testified to what Mary bore and still bears in her as the chosen Mother of the Messiah. Her inspired hymn in praise of God’s goodness, as response to the prophetic utterances of Elizabeth, teach us humility and faith. It invites us to keep God’s name holy while trusting in His justice and loving care. It also urges us to keep the blessedness of Mary alive from generation to generation by our filial relationship with her. Just like she did at the wedding feast at Cana, Mary was moved to visit Elizabeth by what she heard, so she would be of help to her in her time of difficulty. To those who hold Mary dear as mother, she continues to visit and her help continues to be on hand. Mary’s children must emulate her missionary zeal, faith, generosity and humility. And Mary’s hymn of thanksgiving must find expression on our lips daily. As we conclude the month of Our Lady, we renew our commitment to imitate her many virtues and count on her motherly intercession.

Lord, may your Mother pray for us. Amen.
