Homily for the Solemnity of the birth of John the Baptist (2)

Homily for the Solemnity of the birth of John the Baptist

Theme: The voice crying in the wilderness

By: Fr Angelo Chidi Unegbu

Today, the Church marks the birthday of St John the Baptist. John was (circa) 6 months older than Jesus. Thus, in exactly 6 months, we shall be celebrating the birh of Jesus (Christmas eve).

John would later address himself as “the voice crying in the wilderness”. As we celebrate his birthday today, we remember all the lone voices crying in the wilderness of injustice, dictatorship, oppression, killings, genocide and mischievous silence.

As John the Baptist was not deterred despite the fact that his voice was scarcely hearkened to, may we be encouraged to keep our voices alive especially in the face of injustice.

As we celebrate John the Baptist today, humanity will forever celebrate all voices of the voiceless because they will forever live in the hearts of the voiceless, in the voices of the persecuted and in the consciences of oppressors.

Happy Feast of John the Baptist to you all.
