HOMILY FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING (YEAR C) 34TH SUNDAY HOMILY

HOMILY Theme: Jesus’ reign

By: Fr. Francis Onwunali

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the Universal King. This celebration brings to an end the Ecclesiastical year. We proclaim today that Christ is the centre of all we are, do or say. It is the “crown” of the year’s celebration.
In the first reading (Dan 7: 13-14), a description is given of the coming of the one Who is like the “Son of Man” who receives everlasting dominion over all. In Him, the old has given way for new and eternal Reign of God. All nations and peoples will be subjected to this rule of the “Son of Man”. Are you ready to be part of this New Kingdom?

The gospel (John 18: 33-37) reminds us that Jesus’ Reign was established by His suffering and death, and reaches its moment of climax in His resurrection from the dead and His ascension into heaven. Before Pilate, Jesus affirms that He is a King, but His Reign is not secular or earthly. This is the Kingdom we are called to be part of and spread – the kingdom of justice, peace and righteousness.

Dear friends, the joy of this celebration is that Christ Jesus in establishing a new Reign of His Kingdom in which He sets us free from sin, has also raised us to the level of sharing in His priesthood whereby we can have a sanctifying effect in the lives of others (Rev. 1: 5-8). It is an honour we do not merit! We are called to acknowledge constantly, the sovereignty of the Lord Jesus in our lives, because “all things were created through Him and for Him” (Col. 1: 12-20). It requires us to accept and at the same time share His gifts of love, faith, hope, forgiveness and compassion.

I pray as we journey in life today, we will through our actions and words proclaim Christ Jesus as the King of our lives. To have Him as King means that no other thing demands our allegiance but Him. So I ask: Who is seated on the throne of my life? May He who has made us a Kingdom of priests to serve our God, reign forever and ever in our lives. Amen!

May we live to serve others. Have a Happy and Glorious Sunday!
