HOMILY FOR THE MEMORIAL OF ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY.

THEME: Give peace a chance!

BY: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese).

HOMILY FOR NOVEMBER 17.

Rev.5:1-10; Luke 19:41-44

Why do human beings love war so much? Weapons of mass destruction continue to be produced by many countries. Nuclear bombs, atomic bombs, rockets, machine guns… Wait a minute! Who’s the enemy? What’s this monstrous giant we’re all trying to kill? We have allowed evil to infest our very beings, all in the name of acrimony and hostility. Years ago, a young boy was brutalised and set on fire, just because he supposedly stole something. Is he worse than those in public office who constantly steal public funds and get away with it?

Friends, when Jesus caught sight of Jerusalem in today’s gospel, he wept over it because they missed the opportunity of peace when God offered it. This is the same Jesus who was slain and with his blood has bought us for God; Hausas as well as Igbos, Yorubas as well as Esans and Binis… Let us learn from St Elizabeth of Hungary, who is one of the few married women we know as saints. She kept her home, loved her husband and her three children. When her husband died, she embraced poverty and built a hospice, where she cared for the sick herself. Let’s heal our world and give peace a chance.

Good morning dear. St Elizabeth of Hungary, pray for us.
