Homily for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord Year A
Theme: The Presentation of the Lord
By: Fr Emmanuel Nwokeji
Homily for Sunday February 2 2020
Today is the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord.
The Jews have three ceremonies for a child. The rite of Circumcision, Redemption of the first born and purification after child birth. Inter alia, these ceremonies remind us that a child is gift of God. Stoics believed that a child was not given to parents but only Lent. Whether given or lent, we are answerable to God for this child.
At the presentation of the child Jesus, Mary and Joseph played their own role by presenting or consecrating Him in the Temple via Simeon. Their poor family background was never an obstacle to fulfil the rite of presentation. They cut their coat according to their size.
Irrespective of every thing, the child Jesus received as a gift grew in wisdom, strength and turned to be a gift for all believers.
As we do our best to play the roles necessary for us as biological or spiritual guardians to children, may their lives increase the joy and minimise sorrow in our societies. May God grant us the grace to remained faithful in worship and in prayer like Simeon and Anna who were counted as Quiet of the land.
Happy feast of presentation of the child Jesus? Fr Emmanuel Nwokeji prays for you and your family.
