Homily for the Feast of the Holy Innocents, Martyrs
Theme: Sacrificed for one man’s Greed!
By: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)
Homily forTuesday December 28 2021
1 John 1:5-2:2; Matt.2:13-18
Today’s celebration reminds us that people can go to any length to secure their hold on worldly fame, riches and power. Yes! Evil has a face because we sometimes give up our wills to the devil. How could Herod order that all male children, two years and below, in Bethlehem and its surrounding districts be killed just because anted to kill the baby Jesus? It is an act so wicked and evil, it’s difficult to wrap our minds around. But it did happen. And many infants died because of one man’s greed.
Friends, the cries of mothers like Rachel do not go unanswered by God. Why then do we prefer darkness to light sometimes? Why do we use our positions of authority to silence and destroy those we consider unimportant? For mere human politics we have sat on round tables and pronounced the death sentence on the weak, the poor, the oppressed; those marginalised by society. Unless we allow Christ’s sacrifice drive out the darkness from our hearts, and let his grace wash us, we shall perish in our sins. May these holy innocents inspire us to always speak out for the voiceless, Amen.
Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
