HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF ST. MATTHEW — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: MATTHEW FOLLOWS JESUS
BY: SR. J. K. OSIYEMI, EHJ
Ephesians 4:1-7,11-13, Psalm 18:2-5, Matthew 9:9-13
Jesus calls anyone he chooses to follow him: tax collector, village girl/boy etc. When he calls, he gives the necessary graces for survival, I therefore must always keep my gaze on him. As unworthy as I am, Jesus desires that I become his follower. Matthew was not loved by certain people, yet Jesus called him. This teaches me to stop recruiting people to hate those I do not like. Am I still ashamed of my background despite Jesus’ love for me? How well am I responding to Jesus’ invitation to follow him?

LET US PRAY
Lord Jesus, you are good and gracious. I am sorry for wishing that you distance yourself from certain people just because I do not fancy them. Thank you for loving me despite my sinfulness. Let me have love for those who are ‘sick’ and bring them to you who love and care for the dejected and rejected. Teach me daily to know that in heaven mercy is weightier than sacrifice. Let me follow you like the sunflower that follows every movement of the sun. Amen.
