HOMILY FOR THE 7TH SUNDAY OF EASTER YEAR A.
THEME: Come Holy Spirit!

(a) The prayers and preparations for the coming of the Holy Spirit is on going. The coming Sunday is the Pentecost Sunday. Amid the preparations for the coming of the Holy Spirit, one thing is always outstanding in the cases where the Holy Spirit descended on the people; and that is, the togetherness of the people.

(b) In the book of Numbers 11, Moses gathered the 70 men together under the tent and they received the Holy Spirit. Even the two who were not in the tent too received because their names were in the one list of the people. In Acts 1, those who received the Holy Spirit gathered together in the Upper Room. The names of some of them where mentioned to indicate their presence and togetherness in the Upper Room. They were united not just because they were together in the Upper Room but as is written; “All these were persevering in prayer with one mind” (Act 1:14) This unity and togetherness in one mind is the underground preparation for the Holy Spirit.
(c) John 17 contains the long prayers of Jesus to the Father for us- “that they may be one” through the Word they have received. A family that is divided in mind and at war with each other cannot claim to be preparing for the coming of the Holy Spirit, not matter how much they invoke. The spirit at at work in divided hearts and families is the “Diabolos” -the Greek word for devil. Diabolos means “the Divider”. We pray against every thing and spirits of divisions as we await the Holy Spirit. Let us learn that the oneness of Mind among the Apostles while waiting for the Holy Spirit was made possible with their praying together. “The family that prays together, stays together. Do you still pray together as a family? At this point of unity in mind can we properly invoke: “come Holy Spirit”.
