HOMILY FOR THE 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER YEAR A.

THEME: “I WILL NOT LEAVE YOU ORPHANS”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

This is the 6th Sunday of Easter. Our Lord Jesus Christ himself made a promise to us and he remains faithful to his promise. Any human person whose both parents have died, especially when such a person is still tender in age is an orphan. Such a person is left without hope and at crossroads not knowing what to do or where to go to. One in this situation needs help and God’s protection. After the resurrection of Jesus , he appeared to his disciples at different occasions. He made them feel his presence and removed fear from them. When he was about to ascend to the Father, he assured them that the advocate will come. “I will not leave you orphans; I will come back to you” (Jn. 14:15-21). This means, God does not leave us without an alternative. He is with us always and we are not left as orphans without hope.

For this reason, Peter tells us, “Reverence the Lord Christ in your hearts, and always have your answer ready for people who ask you the reason for the hope that you all have” (1pt. 3:15-18). We must place all our hope solidly in the promise that Jesus will not leave us orphans. He promised to send us the advocate, the Holy Spirit. Such a promise is real and must be fulfilled. Jeaus will never abandon his Church. We should not be afraid, for he says, “I am with you always!” We have a LIVING GOD WHO NEVER FAILS! Our hope is in him.

This hope motivated Philip who went to a Samaritan town and proclaimed Christ to them and the people united in welcoming the message (cf. Acts 8:5-8ff). We too should go in confidence to proclaim the message of Christ to those marginalized, the mentally challenged, the unbelievers, the needy and those in doubt about salvation in Christ. As we anticipate the Ascension of the Lord into heaven and the coming of the Holy Spirit, let us pray for those without faith, those who have lost hope and the orphans with no help, that the advocate will come to bring peace to the whole world, amen. Happy Sunday.
