HOMILY FOR THE 3RD SUNDAY IN EASTER — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: DO YOU LOVE ME MORE THAN THESE?
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Acts 5:27-32.40-41, Rev 5:11-14, John 21:1-19
As a priest I often wonder why I ended up here. There are days I get insulted and taken for a ride. There are days I wonder where I would be, how much money I would now have in my bank account if I had chosen another vocation. There are days I wonder how my wife and kids would have looked like… But you see, like St Peter, I didn’t choose this vocation. It chose me. And there is a sense in which some greater cause has chosen us all. This is simply God’s way. So in today’s Gospel reading, Peter misses his old profession and decides to go back. We also get like this sometimes. It’s called backsliding.

But Jesus won’t let Peter backslide. As leader, Peter had more responsibility. So after acting as guide to make his apostles score a great catch, and feeding them breakfast, Jesus takes Peter aside and gives him the opportunity to make up for the three times he had previously denied him. Jesus says, “Peter, do you love me more than these?” Was Jesus referring to Peter’s old profession of fishing? Perhaps Jesus referred to the other disciples. Maybe Jesus meant the question in both senses. In any case, Peter gets the message, and with each affirmation of love, he gets an equal responsibility. Friends, we too must follow Peter’s example. We must make the decision to love God more than everything else, no matter what it costs us.
Good morning dear. Happy Sunday!
