HOMILY FOR THE 3RD SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR A. (4)

HOMILY FOR THE 3RD SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR A.

THEME: “GIVE ME A DRINK”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

This is the 3rd Sunday of Lent. Traditionally, it is referred to as (Gaudate) Joyful Sunday. By now our Lenten observances must have gone deep within us. At this moment many of us must have lost weight and become spiritually uplifted. This loss of weight is for us to gain spiritual strength. When we fast, pray and give alms we gain spiritual weight and become strengthed. The water we need now is not ordinary water. We should ask the Lord in prayer to give us Living Water. Moses prayed and the Lord told him: “You must strike the rock, and water will flow from it for the people to drink” (Ex. 17:3-7).

One of the virtues of Lenten observance is almsgiving, especially to the poor. There are many beggars along the streets . It is our chance to offer a little help to them. Jesus might come to you in the form of one of them. Do not drive him away. He came asking the Samaritan woman for a drink. “Give me a drink” (Jn. 4:5-42).

The little things we do to manifest our faith in God matter a lot. A drink from a Samaritan woman made the entire town to belive in Jesus. In the same way, our positive attitude towards others renews their hope. Paul says, “This hope is not deceptive, because the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given to us” (Rom. 5:1-2. 5-8). Let us stop grumbling, but be strong in faith and good works. Happy Sunday.
