HOMILY: 32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR A)

THEME: Be On Your Guard, Let Your Love For God Not Grow Cold.

Wis.6:12-16; 1Thes.4:13-18; Matt.25:1-13.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins.

This parable informs the effect of being unprepared in welcoming the Messiah at the level of wider meaning for Jesus’ immediate audience; the Jews. At the universal level, it underscores the importance of being ready for Christ’s return in any event, even if He delays longer than expected. When He does return, there will be no second chances for the unprepared.

During the time of Jesus on earth, there was a solemn procession from the home of the bride to the home of bridegroom: taking of the bride from her father’s house to his own house by the bridegroom. This procession was a symbolic act of marriage. The wedding would begin at the bride’s house when the bridegroom arrived to observe the wedding ritual. Then, a procession would follow as the bridegroom takes the bride to his house for the completion of festivities. It happened that at the arrival of the bridegroom, five wise virgins were present, while five foolish virgins were absent due to lack of sufficient oil for their lamps. Their absence merited them being shut out from the wedding feast they longed for.

My dear beloved follow Christians, it not enough to long for good things in life, it not enough to be part of wonderful group, it is not enough to be a Christian at large. But are we ready to keep making sacrifices always, to keep taking responsibilities and and always ready to go and meet the Lord.

Let the delay of the parousia or the Lord or the Good we long for not set the danger of our love growing cold. The Son of man is the Lord of surprises. He comes when you least expected it. If He comes unexpectedly, where will you be found?, what will you be doing?

May our oil, our good works through the grace of God and our constant efforts be sufficient for us to meet the Lord.

Happy Sunday!
