HOMILY THEME: REMEMBER LOT’S WIFE!

Wisdom 13:1-9, Ps. 19:2-3, 4, Luke 17:26-37
The book of Wisdom presents a beautiful argument against idolatry and materialism by saying that all atheists/ unbelievers are foolish by the nature of their preoccupation. If people worship idols and certain creatures of God because of the power they think these creatures manifest, should they not be wise enough to imagine the power and beauty of their real maker? The psalmist says it clearly that ‘The heavens proclaim the glory of God and the firmament shows forth to get to the work of his hands …No speech, no word…but their sound goes forth through all the earth’, Ps 19: 2 – 5. How can people be so foolish to admire a computer or software without thinking of the human mind that designed it?

People have no excuse to perish in these modern times after the level of salvific work that has been done by Christ and the degree of the spread of the gospel. The scriptures inundate us with stories of what happened to generations in the past like Noah or Lot’s generation. Only those who obeyed strictly the commandments of God were saved. God permits no backsliding faith or looking back at the allurements of materialism and corruption. If we always try to remember what happened to people like Lot’s wife then we would be wise enough to remain faithful to the commands of God. The scriptures have warned us clearly that the Son of man is coming at an hour we do not expect. Apart from the coming of the end time, Christians in Nigeria have also been warned about a number of dangers looming largely around us today, for example the danger of Islamization. People always have the tendency of continuing their business as usual; Many of our politicians will continue to squander our national treasury while many so called ministers of God will continue to perfect their art of deceit and materialism, making Christianity and corruption to grow together in direct proportion in this country until one day it will happen again like in the days of Noah and Lot. Ofcourse, the righteous shall be saved while the corrupt and backslidden in faith will perish like Lot’s wife. Let us be more spiritually sensitive to the signs of the time. May God bless you today!
