HOMILY FOR THE 2ND SUNDAY OF THE ADVENT YEAR A.
THEME: A voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.
BY: Fr. Diotacious Chikontwe SMA
*READINGS OF THE DAY*
Dear brethrens, last Sunday, we began our Advent Season with the call to preparation and vigilance. In this 2nd Sunday of Advent Year A, we are called to repentance and conversion as the Church reminds us of the preaching and figure of St. John the Baptist in today’s Gospel. _”Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!…‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths”_
*ABOUT THE FIRST READING*
Our first reading of today, describes us with the Messianic prophecy and the divine promise of a life transformed to that of everlasting justice, peace and harmony brought about by the definitive coming of Our Savior. However, God does not wish to impose himself on us. He wants us to freely accept His Son and gives us the time and capability to discern and choose our path here on earth whether to live for God or not, and also the responsibility for the consequences of our choices.
*ABOUT THE GOSPEL READING*
The Gospel of Matthew presents the sudden appearance of John the Baptist, introduced as a “Voice” crying. It appears unclear whether the expression “in the wilderness” has to do with the location of the crying Voice or the location where the highway has to be prepared for the coming Messiah. The general oddity characterizing both the Messenger and his Message makes it quite difficult where to place the expression. John the Baptist was a rare witness, his choice of food and clothing suggests he could have been in the wilderness, for everything about him spelt detatchment!.
*WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM THE LITURGY OF TODAY?*
The message of John the Baptist is clear, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand”. He, not only announces the kingdom, but sounds a warning on the right disposition to receive it, which is repentance. There is so much to be taken, both from the messenger and his message.
Many would naturally desire the kingdom without accepting the condition for its attainment. The kingdom promises peace and serenity and an abolishment of all enmity and predatory tendencies in every creature.
In this 2nd Sunday of Advent Year A, let us then “prepare the way of the Lord” and “make straight his path” through deeds of conversion done out of love for God. May we shun evil and sin and choose and do what is good, what pleases God most in the little things of each day. May we carry out good deeds of prayer, frequent reception of the Sacraments, daily struggle to live the virtues, especially those which make life pleasant for others.
May the message of John the Baptist penetrate our hearts and make us good for God’s kingdom through Christ our Lord, amen.
