HOMILY FOR THE 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR B

HOMILY FOR THE 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

THEME: The voice calling for response

BY: Fr. Emmanuel Nwokeji.

1Sam. 3:3-10,19.
1Cor. 6:13-15, 17-20.
Jn. 1:35-42.

Having two ears, two eyes and, one mouth suggest that we should listen more, see clearly and with certainty speak less. Samuel was attentive even at sleep. He recognized that a voice was calling him and, he followed the due process to know who was calling. It is only when we are attentive to our environment that we can hear the voice calling for response.

John was attentive to recognized Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God. He showed his two disciples to Jesus and they followed Jesus. His testimony about Jesus was true. He testified what he saw. Many people today don’t give true testimony of their experience with others. A lot of false witnesses from superiors, a lot of false testimony from those in charge. Mediocre drives joy in listening to false testimony, enemies, people with inferiority complex and identity crisis are good in giving false testimony about others. If you lack good qualities, work for them instead of destroying those who possessed them. Ignorant people will accept all forms of false testimony without verification and proper clarification.

The two disciples that followed Jesus received a fundamental question: What Are You Looking For? It is pertinent to ask ourselves and those entrusted to us this kind question depending on the situation. Proper question will always moderate our actions. If you are asked; what are you looking for? you might belong to those looking for security, material possession, peace, healing, change etc.

The two disciples’ response to Jesus; “Where You Are Staying” should be a Christian guide. Look for Jesus where he is. There are many centers or spiritual shops claiming to be where Jesus stays. The Eucharist or The Mass is the greatest place you found Jesus. Go there and your problem will receive attention. Come to Jesus always, His presence will change a lot for you.

Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Where do we lead people to? Take your friends, family and co workers to Jesus.

The moment we come to God, there is a new relationship. This relationship will bring a new name. During our baptism, we are given a new name because it is a spiritual beginning of new life and relationship with God. The same change of name happened to Simon whom Jesus gave Celphas as new name.

Coming to Jesus will bring to fulfilment what God want us to be and do for Him. Jesus sees far beyond what we are.

As we come to Jesus, let us take the words of St. Paul serious. Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. This temple; our body should not be sacrificed at the table of harlotry or prostitution. My dear it is not good.

May God grant us the grace to remain faithful in following Jesus with pure instrument as our body.

Happy Sunday!
