HOMILY FOR THE 29TH SUNDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: TUSSLING FOR POSTS
BY: Fr. Justus Oruh
Isaiah 53:10-11 / Hebrews 4:14-16 / Mark 10:35-45
(a); The two brothers, James and John came to Jesus asking to occupy the places of honor in his Glory, one at right and the other at the left. When the other 10 Apostles heard this, they became angry and “indignant at the two brothers” -how could only two of you from the same family occupy the whole place? The Gospel mirrows always what happens among us; how people struggle and tussle for posts, positions and honor. Sometimes it becomes a family affair, Sometimes at all costs. At such background, it is about power, firm and money. If Christ were to be like some of the political god-fathers, he would ask them to bring money to secure the place and thus a lineage of a corrupt regime is established.

(b) Christ tell us Christians, “you know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you.” He who wants to lead must serve. If there should be struggling among us, it should be the passion in seeking places and means we could serve others.
(c) Jesus asked the two brothers, “do you understand what you are asking for” Do must people struggling and tussling for positions to lead others understand what it means? We mean in every group, big or small. The paradox Christ gives us is: we lead by serving. Our importance and fulfillment in any group we find ourselves and in life in general comes to limelight through the services we give others and for which we will be remembered when we are not there. Could we think meditatively about this; that Christ came just to serve.
