HOMILY FOR THE 24TH DECEMBER

HOMILY FOR THE 24TH DECEMBER

HOMILY THEME: THE BENEDICTUS

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

2 Samuel 7:1-5,8-12,14,16, Psalm 88:2-5,27,29, Luke 1:67-79

Today, 24th December, is the last day of this season of Advent. The birth of the Messiah is very imminent, and different signs are given to signal the fulfilment of the promise made of old.

In the first reading (2 Sam 7: 14-16), David desired to build God a dwelling place. However, God reserved such desire and promised to build David a house from David’s own descendants. “I will preserve the offspring of your body after you and make his sovereignty secure… your house and your sovereignty will always stand secure before me and your throne be established for ever”.

In the gospel (Luke 1: 67-79), Zechariah haven regained his voice with the birth and naming of his son, John, broke out into great hymn of joy and happiness- the Benedictus (Blessed). He praised and blessed God because “God has raised up for us a mighty Saviour in the house of David His servant” and in the person of Jesus Christ, “God has visited His people and come to their rescue”.

Dear friends, God is always taking initiative for our own good. God does so always to show us of His unconditional love for us. If we sincerely respond to this love- agape, it will lead us into “serving Him in holiness and virtue in His presence, all our days.”

I pray as we journey in life today, we will be challenged to sing forever of God’s love and proclaim His truth with our mouth (Ps. 89: 2). May He give light to those of us who live in the darkness of sin and the shadow of death. May the brightness of this light guide our feet into the way of peace. May the joy of this season radiate in all that you do today and always. Have a testimony-full day!
