HOMILY FOR THE 1ST MONDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY FOR THE 1ST MONDAY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Heb 1:1-6; Psalm 96(97):1-2, 6-7, 9; Mark 1:14-20

The salvific events that we celebrated during Christmas season, the Incarnation, happened at the appointed time, marked in the first reading by, “in our own time,” and inaugurated the “last days.” They mark the time of fulfillment and the perfection of the promises and prophecies of old in the person of Christ, who is introduced to us in relation to God as the perfect image of the Father, and in relation to creation as one who is “far above” the rest of creation.

As Jesus began his public ministry, the mystery of his Incarnation took on concrete implications, with him touching the lives of people by his words (call to repentance and proclamation of the Kingdom), cleansing and healing. To enable the proper human religious response, he invited others into his fold, first as disciples, who followed him and learned his ways, and would, in turn, be sent out to proclaim the good news of the kingdom and bring others to Christ. That is the implication of the words with which he called the first four: “follow me;” I will transform you into fishers of men. That invitation is also extended to us and we have been responding. Our response should be lifelong and demands continued renewal and commitment. We are always in the process of being remolded and remade. Let us be malleable in the hands of the Master, so that we may become effective instruments for the establishment of his kingdom on earth.

Lord, transform our response to your call into greater outcomes for the good of humanity. Amen.
