Homily for the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C

Theme: This hoard of yours, whose will it be?

By: Fr. Patrick

Homily for Sunday August 4 2019

Gospel: Lk 11:1-13

Vanity of vanities, the preacher says. [Vanity of vanity.] All is vanity! There is a lot of truth in that line from our First Reading. Many of us work very hard and accumulate so many things. What is it all for? We’re going to have to leave it behind some day and we’ve no control over the when or the where.

My friends Jesus encourages us to be more concerned about storing up treasure for ourselves in heaven than in this world. This makes perfect sense for there is ample evidence to show that things don’t make us happy, rather it is the quality of our relationships that determine our happiness. Relationships here include family, friends, our community, our God, the vulnerable, even our pets and nature itself. By building up and nurturing our relationships we store up treasure for ourselves in heaven.
