HOMILY FOR THE 15TH FRIDAY OF ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: CELEBRATING GOD’S GOODNESS

BY: Fr. Isaac Awe

Matt 12:1-8

In our world today, we have neglected praising God because we lack the virtue of contentment and we are always nagging but we have forgotten that being alive is the first gift ever we should thank God for because with life there is hope. However, One thing we need to know is that, many are seeing us as their prayer points while we still aspire to be like others.

It’s true that human wants are insatiable but despite that, we should be disciplined through moderation. Giving thanks is evident in our first reading today as Moses and Aaron did wonderful deeds in the presence of their enemy pharaoh through the intervention of God. In everything we do, let us know that we are not alone and God is at work in us.

What does the commandment “keep holy the Sabbath” require of us? Or better yet, what is the primary intention behind this command? The religious leaders confronted Jesus on this issue. The “Sabbath rest” was meant to be a time to remember and celebrate God’s goodness and the goodness of his work, both in creation and redemption.

It was a day set apart for the praise of God, his work of creation, and his saving actions on our behalf. It was intended to bring everyday work to a halt and to provide needed rest and refreshment. Hosea (6:6): I desire mercy, and not sacrifice. While the claims of ritual sacrifice are important to God, mercy and kindness in response to human need are even more important.

Reflection: Do we honour the Lord in the way we treat our neighbour and celebrate the Lord’s Day?

PRAYER: Lord, make us to walk in your way and be a reflection of you wherever we find ourselves. Amen
