HOMILY FOR THE 13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR C

THEME: “I WILL FOLLOW YOU WHEREVER YOU GO”

BY: Fr. Cajetan Anyanwu

HOMILY FOR SUNDAY JUNE 26 2022

Jesus knows our secret thoughts even before we make them known. He already knows when we wish to make genuine requests. He does not turn down our good requests. It’s only our inordinate desires that he frowns at. To truly follow Jesus requires self sacrifice, self abandonment and genuine commitment.

Elisha left his oxen and followed Elijah (Kgs. 19:16.19-20). This means that Elisha saw something good in Elijah. No one follows an untrue master. A worthy master has something precious to offer those who follow him. Hence, Jesus the master has the best treasure for those who follow him. He gives us freedom.

Paul says, “when Christ freed us, he meant us to remain free” (Gal. 5:1.13-18). Those who follow Christ genuinely are set free from slavery to sin and other evil desires. They are led by the true Spirit. To follow Christ wherever he goes means to walk in the right direction. Those who wish to follow him with lip service he says, “once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God ” (Lk. 9:51-62). Those who follow Christ in truth and Spirit are blessed. Happy Sunday.
