HOMILY FOR CHRISTMAS VIGIL

HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK OF ADVENT.

THEME: The human baby Jesus!

by Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese).

Gen.49:2,8-10; Matt.1:1-17

It’s exactly eight days before Christmas. Yes! These eight days have special antiphons and selected readings to suit the mood of longing for the coming of the Saviour at Christmas. Today, we go back in time to take a look at Jesus’s human history. He was of the tribe of Judah. No wonder Jacob gathered his sons in the first reading to remind them how important Judah is. He tells them that the sceptre shall not pass from Judah, nor the mace from beneath his feet until it comes to whom it belongs – Jesus Christ the Son of God.

In the same vein, the gospel traces Jesus’ human history too. It makes us realise that the Son of Man did not fall off the sky. He didn’t have a perfect lineage either. There were many sinners, as well as Saints in that family line; ordinary human beings who rose from grass to grace. Friends, as we enter these eight days before Christmas, let us remember that just as Jesus came into human history and purified it, so also shall he purify us this season and always, by his special grace. We need not be discouraged therefore, for there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. Let us pray that the light of Christ may shine on us today, Amen.

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
