HOMILY FOR PALM SUNDAY YEAR A.(1)

HOMILY FOR PALM SUNDAY YEAR A.

THEME: What pained Him most.

BY: Fr. Justus Oruma

(a) Jesus entered Jerusalem triumphantly with the praises of the people singing Hossana! Hossana! with palm branches. He entered the Holy City where everything written about Him will be fulfilled.

(b) There He said, “my heart is sorrowful unto death”. In my own opinion, what pained Christ most was that his closest brother would betray him, one he calls a friend. The one he entrusted His Church would deny Him, not once but 3x. His own people, those He healed their infirmities would mock him, they would prefer a thief to him and pay him back with a cross. It was all coming from insiders.

(c) One reads the troubled heart of Jesus when He said, “one of you will betray me” – an insider. It is not painful as such, when a enemy does you evil beacuse you expect it, but it can be unbearable when it comes from a brother, a partner or a friend. This call to mind Psalm 55, “if this were done by an enemy, I could have born it, but it is you my friend, who ate my bread”. And Jesus gave Judas bread too at that time. The many swords of the enemy do not kill us before the one strike of a friend. Those who kill us and betray us are among us, “one of you will betray me”. They are insiders. That is what pains most. But they should ask Judas how his life and the ???? money ended. It all ended in the graveyard. Never make anyone sorrowful unto the heart, but If your heart is sorrowful, unite it with those of Christ for by His wounds we are healed. Blessed Holy Week!
