HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE 7TH WEEK OF EASTER
THEME: GUIDANCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
BY: Fr. Francis Onwunali
HOMILY FOR MONDAY MAY 30 2022
On this fourth day of Novena to the Holy Spirit we pray for the gift of “Patience”. Being a Christian and living out the Christian life is not always an easy task. Claims of being rooted in Christian faith can only be tested in the face of challenges. Our firmness in bearing witness is sustained by the Holy Spirit.
In the first reading (Acts 19: 1-8), Paul spoke to some people from Ephesus, though believers but have not been baptized in the Name of the Trinity as to receive the Holy Spirit. As soon as they were baptized and Paul laid hands on them, they were empowered to witness boldly in the Synagogue.
In the gospel (John 16: 29-33), Jesus questions His disciples who think that they have a hold on everything about their faith. Jesus reminds them that with His passion and death, they will desert Him but He is confident because His Father is with Him and in bearing witness to Him, they should be brave for He is already victorious. How courageous are we to stand with and for Jesus?
Dear friends, to be a true Christian is a challenge and it is only with the guidance of the Holy Spirit that we can withstand the tribulations that come our way. Are we able to stand firm in our resolve or are we willing to compromise our faith? Jesus is looking for modern day martyrs (witnesses) who are ready to make selfless sacrifices for the truth of the gospel and the good of others.
I pray as we journey in life today and await the coming of the Holy Spirit, we will resolve to hold unto the truth of our faith no matter the cost. With God all things are possible. With the Holy Spirit as our guide, we will surmount all challenges and difficulties. May our lives radiate God’s loving presence and mercy. Have a witness-full day!
