HOMILY FOR MONDAY MAY 16 2022

*READINGS OF THE DAY*
Acts 14:5-18
Psalm 113:1-4,15-16
John 14:21-26

*ABOUT THE FIRST READING*
Paul is speaking to a pagan audience in today’s first reading, he tells them that the living God did not leave them without evidence of himself in the good things he did for them, such as abundant rain, the growth of crops, sufficient food. It can be helpful for us to recognize the presence of the living God in the good things in our own lives, especially in these times when we have so many not so good things to come to terms with.

*ABOUT THE GOSPEL READING*
The gospel reading of today makes reference to the Advocate, the Holy Spirit. The role of the Holy Spirit, according to our reading, is to be our teacher, to keep bringing to our minds the teaching, the word, of Jesus. The Holy Spirit helps us to keep Jesus’ word, especially his command to ‘love one another as I have loved you’. In that short gospel reading, there is a whole vision of the Christian life, of God’s relationship with us as Father, Son and Spirit, and of our relationship with each other.

*CONCLUSION*
Jesus assures us that we are not left alone. He tells us that the Holy Spirit will be sent to us, and he will teach us everything and remind us of all that Jesus has told us. We know that this means more than an individual relationship with the Lord and fidelity in following the teachings of the Church. We are called to communion, both in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and as part of the Body of Christ.

*LET US PRAY*
Lord, help me see those areas in my life where I have been saying no and need to say yes. Open my heart to your presence in my life. The opportunities for obedience are like knocks on the door of my heart; let me open that door so that you can come in and dine with me (Revelation 3:20).Amen.
