Homily for Monday of the 3rd Week of Lent

Theme: Wisdom in unexpected places!

By: Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)

Homily for Monday March 21 2022

2 Kings 5:1-15; Luke 4:24-30

Maybe the problem is that we think we have God figured out. We expect Him to act exactly how we think He should. When He doesn’t, we are disappointed and begin to cry foul. Naaman the leper expected Elisha to come lay hands upon him and throw some spiritual acrobatics and incantations. But in the end, a bathe in the river was enough. The people in Jesus home town also thought they had Jesus figured out – for them, he was merely the son of a carpenter, and he had nothing much to offer.

Friends, we must avoid the familiarity that breeds contempt. We mustn’t think we have all it takes to understand God’s ways. That we go to mass everyday and receive communion on each of those days does not mean that we can predict God. Let us try to be humbler. Sometimes, wisdom is found only in the most unexpected places; in the mouth of a servant girl, as we see in the first reading, in the advice of hired hands, the insight of the weak and oppressed… We must stop thinking we have God figured out. We don’t.

Good morning dear. God bless your week ahead.
