Homily for Monday December 16 2019

(Mt. 21:23-27) December 16, 2019, First Day of Simbang Gabi

In today’s Gospel Jesus’ authority was questioned. In answer to the doubts of the chief priests and the elders, Jesus asked them about John’s authority. Jesus gave them a question which puts them in a dilemma. If they claim John’s baptism is of human authority, the crowd will be angry, because John was a prophet to them. If they say that John’s baptism was of heavenly origin, they will be faulted by not believing in him. Thus, they decided not to answer. Jesus did the same.

We begin today the Simbang Gabi, a nine-day gathering together in prayer, breaking of bread, listening to the Word of God, preparing for the Lord’s coming, asking for the intercession of the BVM, and repentance. As an initial offering to help us obtain a meaningful and fruitful novena, we have the question of authority. The Jews, particularly the Jewish leaders, challenged Jesus’ authority. Jesus was teaching wherever He goes. His listeners were touched and moved by Him. They believed Him. The Jewish leaders were more jealous than interested to determine Jesus’ authority. It was reflected in their response to Jesus in the question of John’s authority.

This brings us to our regard for Jesus authority. We are talking about the power of Jesus to command our obedience to His teachings. Do we recognize His authority. Do we believe He is the Son of God. Do we believe He was sent by the Father to save us? The Jews missed their chance. No wonder, up to now, they are still awaiting the Messiah. We believe that they are awaiting for no one. We should not miss our chance. The early Christians witnessed to Jesus’ life and ministry. His authority is without doubt. He and the Father are one. Everything He taught came from the Father.

This is what we will reflect on and bring back to memory in the next nine days. The circumstances of the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, before, during, and after His birth! Listen to every account. Picture every scene. Use your imagination. Catch every message. Never miss a beat. The readings will be rich with signs and symbols. All will lead to one truth, the Truth of Jesus, the Son of God, as the promised Messiah, true man and true God.

We have to admit that we tend to forget this Christ-event at times. Christmas has become a celebration without Christ. Gifts, foods, merrymaking, music, decorations, and other material things get the limelight. To many, Santa Claus is the main man. What happened to the reason for the season? Let us bring Him back. We can only do if we believe in Him, that He came from the Father and was sent to save us. Let us anticipate each day of these nine days. Welcome each celebration as an opportunity to know more Jesus so we can love Him and serve Him.
