HOMILY FOR MONDAY SEPTEMBER 19 2022

“Jesus said to the crowds, “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light.”

Light is one of the greatest gifts God has given to humanity. Light is the opposite of darkness, and as such, often represents all that is good. This includes the Highest Good, Jesus Christ, who called Himself the light of the world (John 8:12). In other words, light leads to life and throughout the Bible is symbolic of being in alignment with God’s plans, purposes and character, and even in His midst.

In the Gospel of today (Luke 8:16-18), Jesus says, “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hidden that shall not be made manifest, nor anything secret that shall not be known and come to light. Take heed then how you hear; for to him who has will more be given, and from him who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”

Jesus is clearly asserting that all Christians through baptism have received light from Him. We become His Lamps armed with His words. And lamps are not covered. That would defeat its very purpose of providing light. To cover or hide the lamp would hurt everyone in the room. Your light should shatter the darkness. Your light should lead others to Christ. Your light should expose error and lead people to the Truth.

There is nothing like private faith. Our faith is in Jesus and that is visible. It’s meant to be a light and it’s meant to be a light for the world. Our light must shine in the marketplace, on the factory floor, in the boardroom, at the office, on our school campus. Wherever we go, there goes the light because we are the light.

Jesus is evidently asking us to represent Him wherever we are. Today, make sure to do all you can to keep your light burning bright and strong. The way to do this is by walking closely with Jesus Christ, “The true light that gives light to everyone” (John 1:9). GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God bless you and your household this week, keep you from harm, and in good health of mind and body through Christ Our Lord Amen. Good morning.
