HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF THE 2ND WEEK OF LENT. (1)

HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF THE 2ND WEEK OF LENT.

THEME: The benefit of putting our Trust in the Lord.

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

The theme running through our readings today is “the benefit of putting our Trust in the Lord.” For Bob Kondrath, “trust is the ability to sink our roots deep to where we can draw life-giving nourishment even in the midst of dry and barren times.”

In the first reading (Jer 17: 5-10), the Prophet Jeremiah says that if our trust is only in other human beings, material wealth and pleasures, we are cursed, because we will end up producing nothing worthwhile. But if our trust is in God, we are blessed and will produce abundantly even during dry times.

In the gospel (Luke 16: 19-31), Jesus shares the parable of Lazarus and the nameless rich man (Dives meaning riches). The rich man went to hell when he died not because of his wealth but because of selfishness and insensitivity. He ignored the poor man, Lazarus, who suffered in his presence for lack of basic needs.

Dear friends, trusting in the Lord is the meaning of life; while trusting in other human beings, material wealth and pleasure is like entering into a contract with disappointment. Where do you put your trust? What are your values? Where do you see yourself in this parable? Trust in transient wealth can not guarantee happiness and fulfilment.

I pray as we journey in life today, we will put our trust in the Lord so that we can be “like a tree by the waterside that thrusts its roots to the stream: when the heat comes it feels no alarm, its foilage stays green; it has no worries in a year of drought, and never ceases to bear fruit” (Jer. 17: 8). May we use our resources to serve and put a smile on the faces of the less privileged around us. Have a Trust-full day!
