(Mt. 6:19-23) Friday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel Jesus gives another brilliant teaching on life. He leads us to a reflection of what is really the most important for us. If we believe that life does not end here on earth, we should live with an eye to the next life. Thus, we must store up treasures which will benefit us for the next life. He tells us to be wise by not settling for those that will last and decay. In other words, our ultimate desires and destiny should rule our lives.

Living in the secular world naturally attracts us to material things. Riches, power, and fame are what mostly matter in everyday life. Having them makes life easier and comfortable not mentioning the prestige attach with them. But they are that – they were meant for this world and nothing for the next life. Thus, values like love, peace, justice, loyalty, honesty, etc. need to be imbibed here and now so that they can usher us in eternal life. The treasure of the heart should thus zero in on these values which are apt and necessary towards being worthy of eternal life.

The secular and the spiritual are connected. It will be a mistake to put a chasm between the two worlds. As human beings, we are in this world as pilgrims. We are on a journey which will end in the next life. Death provides that transition from earthly life to eternal life. As Easter people, that is men and women of the resurrection, we believe that death is not the end of life. Life continues to the next life which is either eternal death or eternal life. Eternal death will be damnation for those who had not been worthy of the Kingdom as taught by Jesus and eternal life will be a life of bliss and blessedness with the Father in His Kingdom. As pilgrims, our eyes are glued to eternal life and wary of eternal death. While on journey here on earth, it is best not to lose focus on our true and rightful destiny which is eternal life, the treasure of the heart.
