HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF 3RD WEEK OF EASTER.

THEME: RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS.

BY: FR. GERALD M.  MUSA

The French say, “Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es” (Tell mne what you eat and I will tell you what you are). This means the physical food we eat determines our physical health. So also, the spiritual food we eat determines our spiritual health. Jesus offers us himself as spiritual food, saying, “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day” John 6:54).

Thus, Jesus makes himself edible through Bread and Wine and so at Mass, bread and wine are spiritually transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ (transubstantiation). Those who eat the Body and drink the Blood establish a blood relationship with Christ. Therefore, to eat and drink the body and blood of Christ is to share his life and spirit. St. Augustine rightly says, “This Flesh alone profiteth not, but let the Spirit be joined to the Flesh..”

In biology, assimilation is the absorption of food by the body. Therefore, we can relate assimilation with the consumption of the body and blood of Christ, which enables a communion (fusion) between partakers and Jesus whom they receive. Are we always ready, willing, and eager to receive the body and blood of Jesus?
