Theme: FRIENDS WITH FAITH.

Homily for Friday January 14 2022

An African proverb says, “If we stand tall it is because we stand on the shoulders of many ancestors.” We may also say, if we stand strong, it is because we stand on the shoulders of friends. A phrase of a poem says: “A true friend is he who listens to your deepest sorrows. A true friend is like toothpaste, when it is put under pressure, it appears!” We see a clear example of true friendship in four anonymous men who brought in their paralysed friend to Jesus. They may have tried the front door and there was no way, the side door and could not get in, the backdoor and found it locked. They were in the midst of a mammoth crowd and “There was no longer room for them, not even about the door” (Mark 2:2). Finally, they did what no one expected, they removed the roof above, got strong ropes, laid the ropes under the stretcher (pallet), held it tightly, and gradually let him down and laid their helpless friend right before Jesus. They believed Jesus was the ultimate solution and their dogged determination, ingenuity and faith moved Jesus to forgive and heal the paralytic instantly. There are times when we are helpless and friends carry us on their shoulders through prayers, support, and encouragement. Can we imitate these faithful friends who approached Jesus with unshakeable faith?
