Homily for Sunday April 12 2020

Today is the greatest day of joy in the life of Christianity as a religion and in the life of every true Christian. This is because we celebrate the highest pride of our religion and hope, our faith has much more been strengthened and assurance made strong. We can proudly and happily shout Alleluia on top of our voices. Jesus Christ the true lamb that was slain and buries has proved more victorious than what he showcased on Palm Sunday. He went to the land of the dead and became the only over-comer who came out alive and with honour. Beloved, Mary of Magdala the woman of history breaker is on stage with the fellow women and saw the truth of the event life and reporting from the scene said: “The heavy stone has been rolled out and they have taken my Lord away and I don’t know where they have put him” As the most mysterious and surprising event that she and the other woman cannot handle, went to Peter and the Apostles to give a life broadcast, Peter and the others especially John went to ascertain the truth of the story and reporting now alive from the scene have this to say: Bending down and looking into the tomb and on entering there, I can see that the body of Jesus is not in the grave and the linen cloth used in wrapping him and the one used on his head are now lying aside. From this confirmation, I as Peter the head of the Apostles and vicar of Christ say to all Christians: Shout Alleluia, it has happened life from the scene of burial as the Lord told us it will be, Yes I can confirm that Jesus Christ our King is risen, sound the trumpet of Salvation. Rejoice O Mother Church exult in Glory, the Risen Saviour shines upon you, let this place resound with joy echoing the mighty song of all God’s people.

Beloved, this mystery is what St Luke was meditating upon after the whole event of the entire life of Christ and had to address the Christian community in such a manner that they would realize that Jesus Christ came to the world with genuine mission and was faithful to it. He made the entire world to know that there is only one event that is most recent which is happening live right now and would always be relevant and present. He says it is happening in Judea and it is about Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Yes, it is about the history maker and greatest achiever in the world’s history, it is no other than Jesus Christ the only Son of God; this event has been replicated to every part of the world. St Luke revealed that God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power. Joy fills the whole world and all creation despite their religious inclination has come to know about it and celebrating it.

Beloved in Christ, humanity did not know the man they were dealing with. He showed them signs that would make they fear and respect him but they were blindfolded by ignorance and wickedness. Did his birth and the signs that accompanied it not speak about his speciality? The gifts of the Magi and their meanings should have told them how mysterious this man is. The ministries he undertook and the wonderful miracles he performed should have thought them great lessons. Has there been any of their great men who raised the dead? The leprosy they feared received healing in his hands and he restored them to the community. All the miracles he performed really surprised them yet they could not resort to reason. The time they were in search of him to kill at the feast and he came and moved freely and yet no one could arrest him was it not a pointer to them that God was with him or that he is God? When they took him to the braw of the hill intending to throw him down from there and he slipped from them, shouldn’t they have known that he has mysterious powers at work in him? Why did the soldiers cover the mouth of his grave with heavy stones so that no one can remove it? The man who told them that if they refuse to give him praise he has the power to raise even grass to do so; this should have made them aware that he has more in him. Why should the soldiers be put on guard over his grave so that his disciples cannot come and steal him and lying that he has risen? Did they not see that all that were prophesied about his suffering and death came true and that same would be the case with the prophesies about his resurrection and more so what he said would happen on the third day? Has he ever lied? Has he ever been unserious before? Has he ever deceived any before and why should they think he was joking that on the third day he would rise? Can he who gave life back to the dead Lazarus not have his own life secured and resurrected? He has risen and he has to rise, he ought to rise and he has done it and defeated death forever such that death has no power over him. He tested death for hours and mocked it and came up more powerfully.

Beloved, this is the day which was made by the Lord, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Let us all join our hearts and sing the praise of God and thank the Lord who is good with his love enduring forever. His right hand has truly and really triumphed and with the new life I have promised to live, I shall not die but live and recount the goodness of the Lord. May Jesus whom the Jews made the rejected stone become for me the corner stone of my life, Amen.
