HOMILY FOR EASTER MONDAY — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: THE JOY OF THE RESURRECTION

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

Acts 2:14,22-33, Psalm 15:1-2,5,7-11, Matthew 28:8-15

On this Monday, the second day of Easter Octave, we continue to celebrate in full swing the joy of the resurrection. The next seven weeks of Easter will see us go through the Acts of the Apostles, recounting how the early Christians lived out their experiences of the Risen Lord and proclaimed those experiences in the days following Jesus’ ascension into heaven.

The first reading (Acts 2: 14, 22-33) presents to us Peter’s first sermon on Pentecost. He boldly proclaims the fulfilment of the promises made by God in ages past. Although Jesus was crucified, He also has been raised up on the third day. Peter remarked that he and the other apostles are witnesses to the Risen Lord.
In the gospel (Matt 28: 8-15), we hear the account of the resurrection and the first encounter of the women and the Risen Lord. Jesus told them to go and tell the apostles and to share the Good News of the Resurrection.
Dear friends, the gift of redemption is given to us through the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ. Our faith is a free assent to the whole truth which God reveals to us through His eternal Word, Jesus Christ. Like the apostles and the women, we are called to be witnesses to this Revealed Truth of our faith. Have I really encountered the Lord so as to effectively bear witness to His name? Christianity without witnessing is incomplete!
I pray that as we journey in life today, we will seek to know our Lord Jesus and His resurrection power more intimately. The power that dispels fear and enthrones courage even in the most difficult challenge of our life. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have tribulations. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16: 13). May our lives be renewed as we encounter and bear witness to Him. Have a witnessing-full day.
