HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 22 2023.

Mark Hart,a well-known youth minister says, “I’m a sinner. I don’t always love God as strongly as I could or as directly as I should. Ash Wednesday reminds me that it is only through God that I have life, He gave it to me. God forgives. He loves. And He gives this sinner a second chance.” The first day of the Lenten season is called Ash Wednesday because of the symbolic use of Ash on the foreheads of believers. The Ash reminds all human beings
of their mortal nature (Genesis 3:19).

The season of Lent is also called a season of grace because it offers an opportunity to purify the heart, renew the spirit and regain the grace of God in the joumey of life. Ash is also a symbol of repentance as some biblical passages indicate. In ancient times people expressed repentance by tearing their garments, wearing sack clothes, and sprinkling ashes on their foreheads (cf. Numbers 19:9; Jonah 3:6).

The spiritual exercises of Lent include Prayers, Fasting, and Almsgiving. Jesus tells us not to make religion become are game of pretence or practice it to impress others or out of a desire for praise, approval, and applause. In summary, Jesus is saying to us: Do the right thing with the right intention. I wish you a very fruitful Lenten Season.

Joel 2:12-18; 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18
