HOMILY FOR 6TH TUESDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: I AM GOING TO HIM WHO SENT ME
BY: Fr Francis Onwunali
Acts 16:22-34; Psalm 137(138):1-3, 7-8; John 16:5–11
God works in mysterious ways to lift us up. As we approach the Solemnity of Ascension, we experience the pain and grief in the hearts of Jesus’ disciples as He speaks to them of His imminent departure.
However, in the gospel (John16: 5-11), Jesus promised His disciples that His going is for their own good; He will send the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, to be with them. “And when he comes, he will convince the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment” (Dominum et Vivificantem, 27). The Holy Spirit, Lord, the Giver of Life, is ever active in the lives of all who are open to His promptings. Have you actually felt the impact of the Holy Spirit in your life?

Paul and Silas, in the first reading (Acts 16: 22-34) because they had received the Holy Spirit, they were filled with joy even as they were persecuted and thrown into jail. With such joy and calling upon the Name of the Lord in songs of praise, they were liberated, and the jailer who experienced such wonderous work of God became a believer together with his household.
Dear friends, God is not distant from us. The Holy Spirit is God’s continuous presence in our midst. As the Spirit of Truth, welcoming the Spirit in our lives will “set us free” (John 8: 32) from every form of bondage and empowers us even to do exceedingly more good things than we can imagine.
I pray as we journey in life today, like Paul and Silas, may we thank and praise the Lord with all our hearts even as we go through different trials and persecutions. We know that our liberation is assured! May we keep thanking God who has already given us victory in Christ Jesus, our Lord (1 Cor. 15: 57). Have a joy and victory-full day!
