HOMILY FOR 5TH TUESDAY IN LENT — YEAR A

HOMILY FOR 5TH TUESDAY IN LENT — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: OVERCOMING MENTALITY

BY: Fr. Paul Karabari

Num 21:4-9; Psalm 102:2-3, 16-20; John 8:21-30

‘And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?’

The First Reading (Numbers 21:4-9) of today shows the complaint and grumbling of the people of Israel against Moses and God who graciously brought them from slavery in Egypt. The anger of God came heavily against them, and fiery serpents bit so many of them. But same God had mercy when they cried unto Him.

They failed to understand that God never leads halfway. He doesn’t initiate a project and forsake it. Overcoming mentality is necessary if we are to enjoy our relationship with God. When we become disappointed with how life seems to be going, we can end up thinking negatively about the future and complain about everything. We blame God, blame family, blame friends, and even blame ourselves. We think we can’t do things, stop taking risks, say no to opportunities that could help us grow, complain about how unfair things are and believe that there is nothing we can do to make a difference to our situation. Basically, we lose hope. But it doesn’t have to be like this.

It is not about our strength entirely. No. It is about what God is doing and will continue to do. With practice, we can create the habit of thinking positively, even when things seem to be up against us. Try and look for the good in every situation and expectantly believe that God will bring good from the bad. So, with practice, we can keep a hopeful and positive attitude, no matter what we are facing. We don’t need to feel crushed by our situation, God has already overcome. Paul said: ‘We have been surrounded and battered by troubles, but we are not demoralised; we are not sure what to do, but we know that God knows what to do; we have been spiritually terrorised, but God hasn’t left our side; we have been thrown down, but we are not broken’ (2 Corinthians 4: 8-9). With the right attitude, we can say the same.

God has nothing to prove to some of us anymore. He has never failed to show up. If he doesn’t manifest his power and glory, it simply means that again is the best for us. God’s love is stable and consistent. This is what the people of  should have remembered. So, whatever you are going through at the moment, don’t allow your spirit to be defeated. Be positive. You can only get stronger. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God show mercy and heal our world. God bless you and your household always through Christ Our Lord Amen. Good morning.
