HOMILY FOR 4TH THURSDAY IN LENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “I KNOWLEDGE THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE THE LOVE OF GOD IN YOU.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Exodus 32: 7-14, Ps. 106, John 5: 31-47
These words of Jesus to the Jewish crowd characterized their hardheartedness and refusal to receive his testimony. Not to have the love of God in us is reason sin abounds so much in society and human beings are not only rebelling against God, but also, being very cruel to one another. The scale and enormity of crime, and the injury it inflicts upon people in today’s world, clearly spell out that cruelty: murders, corruption, trafficking, slavery, exploitation, robberies, rapes, kidnapping, child abuse and many other crimes are increasing daily despite the global efforts to stem them.

These crimes are rooted in idolatry because human beings have created gods for themselves out of power, fame, popularity, greed, undue ambition, addictions, narcissism, wealth, immorality, occultism and false religion. Such idolatrous commitments begin with a turn away from God and provoke God’s anger as we see in the first reading. Amidst such a hopeless situation, Moses teaches us a lesson. We need more intercessors for our sinful world; people who commit to the path of righteousness and godly living, and who pray unceasingly, petitioning God for the conversion of sinners, seeking forgiveness and pleading restoration for our world. We have to pray like Moses, asking God to “remember” His promises and save our world. That way, even if we humanity is undeserving of God’s saving grace, God would do it for the sake of His own Name. That is what grace is; an undeserved and an unmerited gift or favor. May God have mercy on us and on our world.
Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people. Amen.
