HOMILY FOR 2ND THURSDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY FOR 2ND THURSDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: REST WHEN NECESSARY

BY: Fr. Paul Karabari

Heb 7:25–8:6; Psalm 40:7-10, 17; Mark 3:7-12

“And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they should crush him.”

When we are physically, emotionally, and spiritually drained, we become vulnerable. We all know that it is challenging to try and get through the day when we have had no sleep. We can become overly emotional or easily irritated. We can lack motivation for the tasks of the day, and can find it hard to concentrate. When we don’t rest or overwhelmed by workload, or too busy, our sleep can be impacted.

So Jesus knew the importance of staying in balance; of work and rest; of giving out and taking in. In the Gospel of today (Mark 3:7-12), Jesus asked His disciples to have a boat ready for Him because of the crowd, lest they crush Him. There were so many people coming and going that Jesus and His apostles didn’t even have time for themselves.

Jesus knew when to remove Himself from the crowd. We should learn to do the same. Ecstatic crowds have been known to stampede and trample people at soccer matches. Such crowds have even, at times, crushed their own players in a mindless rush of bodies. Angry crowds have destroyed property and murdered people. People in crowds often suspend good judgment and do things they would never do if they were alone and thinking.

Crowds can be thrilled one moment and furious the next. Crowds are unpredictable, and for that reason, potentially dangerous.

Unless we learn to rest and take time off, we are opening ourselves up to potential danger. Sometimes the enemy tries to stop us by persuading us to think that we need to do it all, until we are exhausted and ineffective.

It doesn’t matter how old we are, how much responsibility we have, or where we work, every one of us needs to take time off in order to maintain our physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

A good general will never commit all his soldiers to the battlefield at the same time. He keeps a reserve force to relieve the exhausted ones when they stagger back from the front lines. Yes, you may have the greatest assignment in the world and be succeeding in it, but unless you ‘keep a reserve’, you are opening yourself up to potential danger.

If Satan can’t defeat you outright, he will settle for an exhausted, ineffective version of the person God wants you to be. If you are a type A, high-energy person, you are particularly at risk. What is the answer? ‘Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint’ (Isaiah 40:30-31). If we are feeling tired and worn out, let us go to God for the rest we need, and ask Him to renew our strength. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE. May God bless you and your household always through Christ Our Lord Amen. You have the assurance of my prayers.
