HOMILY FOR 2ND MONDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY FOR 2ND MONDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: ARE YOU BORN AGAIN?

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Acts 4:23-31, Ps. 2:1-9, John 3:1-8

The reality of being ‘born again’, is still so much of a concern to many of us. As Catholics, we often have to ‘grapple’ with our separated brethren who insist we aren’t born again. This isn’t the sad part. The sad part is that in ignorance, the majority of us who are baptised by water and confirmed by the Holy Spirit still get confused as well. In today’s Gospel reading, Nicodemus, like many of us, didn’t quite understand what it meant to be ‘born again’. He needed to grasp the substance of what Jesus said to him.

Friends, today, Jesus has a heart to heart conversation with a wealthy man, who was also a Pharisee, and a member of the Sanhedrin. It’s understandable that such a revered member of the Jewish Court could only come to Jesus at night. When Jesus uses the words ‘born again by water and the Holy Spirit’, he speaks of a change so radical and total, that it is like a new birth. We can’t blame Nicodemus for misunderstanding, since only God can make this possible. In baptism by water, God makes us die to our old selves, as we receive the grace of new birth. In confirmation, we receive the fulness of the Holy Spirit, who makes us strong, perfect Christians and soldiers of Christ. There’s no better way to be BORN AGAIN!

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead!
