HOMILY THEME: THE DEVIL IS STRONG, BUT JESUS IS STRONGER

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us — for it is written, ‘Cursed be everyone who hangs on a tree’ — that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” (Galatians 3:13-14)

Today, St. Paul continues his lecture to the Galatians, whom he called foolish for their erroneous thinking. Paul reminded them that Abraham had not even been circumcised when God called him and made him the source of blessing for all nations. He then shows that with the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross (the real deal), we have been freed from the requirement of circumcision (the symbol).
– Does this mean the Ten Commandments have become invalid with Christ’s sacrifice? No way. Even Jesus himself said: “Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.” (Matthew 5:17-18).
– In today’s Gospel passage, some people accused Jesus of using the power of demons. This crowd did not doubt Beelzebub’s power but considered Jesus powerless. Sadly, some so-called Christians today still think like this. In his response, Jesus said that no matter how strong the devil is, he cannot cast out himself. A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand.
– Jesus gave the parable of a strong man who guards his palace securely, but when one stronger than he comes, he breaks away his defences. In other words, demons have power, but God is more powerful. Jesus is the stronger man. When we come in the name of Jesus, every demon, every satanic power must bow. “At the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.” (Philippians 2:9-10).
– Demons are powerful, but God is more powerful. Do not be scared of demons. “Little children, you are of God, and have overcome them; for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4). Bad things happen, but God reigns supreme over heaven and earth. Your faith in God is a defence against the forces of darkness. They dare not come near you when they know you are not afraid of them.
– The people wanted to see a sign, a show of power, or a display like that of Elijah and the prophets of Baal, but Jesus didn’t put up any show. If you believe, you don’t need to see signs and wonders (proofs); if you don’t believe, a million signs will not convince you. Today’s Gospel passage begins with “Jesus had just cast out a demon.” Was this sign not enough for them?
– Jesus explained the secret of demonic possession by saying: “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he passes through waterless places seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ When he comes and finds it swept and put in order, he brings seven other spirits more evil than himself… The last state of that man becomes worse than the first.” (Luke 11:24-26).
– In other words, demons do not function without their host. They only possess a free heart (swept and tidy). If God occupies your heart, there will be no room for the demons. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8). We make our hearts attractive to demons when we expose ourselves to impure thoughts, wicked imaginations and other sinful acts. We are either with Jesus, or we are against Him.
Let us pray: Almighty, ever-living God, deepen our faith in your ultimate power to save us. We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.
