HOMILY THEME: Our final destiny
Poverty, being poor; Richness, being rich; Being a priest; Being married are all states of life.
None is a direct automatic ticket either to heaven or to hell fire.
It is the life lived in between these states and the gate of heaven, from here and now till then that determines our final destiny.
In the biblical story, and in the Jewish context, poverty seemed to be presented by Christ as a state that helps people rely more on God. The rich runs a greater risk of asking himself: Why do I really need God when my richness can attend to almost all my needs?
Yet, each one can make it either to heaven or to hell.
Christ had rich friends also. Joseph of Arimathea, who paid for the costly tomb hewn out of rock, in which Christ was buried, the friend that had ulo elu with a spacious hall where the last supper took place. etc, etc.
The dishonest servant of last week used material wealth to make friends adighi ama ama. The rich man of today failed to use passing temporal wealth to seek and gain eternal things, things which do not pass.
Think of the prayer of the author of the book of Proverbs, 30:8-9:
“Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the LORD?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God”.
